Post-mortem (Game Jam #1)
WGJ #62 "Playing the villain"
Hooray! My first ever entry into a game jam in general or a weekly game jam!
First: Let me introduce myself:
My name is Kuhn Chris, I'm usually a software engineer and server administrator at day, but a nerdy little game dev at night.
I excel in all forms of programming and languages, one of my big plus points is that I can learn myself into pretty much any language and environment given a bit of time.
Preferably I work under pressure, if I give myself too much spare time I tend to slack off to different things, so I chose the Weekly Game Jams to slowly increase my knowledge of unity and challenging myself to "stick to a topic for a week" and let go after that week.
But enough of myself! Let's get into the game!
This one is an total failure. To be honest, the idea was quiet nice:
You stole a princess of a foreign land and need to keep her in your castle.
But the king wants to get his daughter back, so he sends waves of "heroes" to take her back.
Your job is to kill all the heroes, by shooting them with dark magic, employing monsters in your castle, trapping them, turning them against each other or any other means of destroying society as is.
...and there comes the big BUT(T):
- Unity SUCKS at displaying primitives.
I had in mind that the princess has a "danger range", which basically is a circle around the princess in which you can move around in.
- My time management is arse
I tried my best to work on this entry, but I kept getting distracted by real-life stuff (it's building season), and some things sadly do have priority over working on a free-time project
- Vacation != Free time
Do I really need to explain why being off work doesn't automatically mean to have spare time? You sure had a girlfriend/boyfriend, partner or a significant other, so I can only assume you know the definition of a 'time sink'.
- I get distracted easily
In best case I create most of the logic in one sitting. This worked really really well with the main menu, which was created in a couple of minutes (it's nothing special), plus the script for the automatic gradient creation is pretty nice and reuseable. But after the main menu I slacked off, and since I get distracted very easily I simply started working on other topics. Hence, no progress.
But aside from those points I really really enjoyed making a game for this game jam, as it gave me this feeling of accomplishing a task or trying to solve a problem that I haven't had before. I do solve issues in my day job, but working with enterprise software doesn't have the same feeling as trying to create something from scratch and solve, sometimes trivial but not easy, problems.
Anyways, I'll surely continue to write games for GameJams, no idea if I will jump right back into them or keep some time between them, but knowing myself, I'll continue, or I'll slack off and so something else...
All the sources will be provided on GitHub, all resources used are CC-BY or CC0, so feel free to use anything you want as long as you credit the people in question. My main source of assets is definitely https://opengameart.org so if I ever forget to credit something or someone, make sure to look there, as it most likely was fetched from that place.
If you got any questions, let me know in the comments below, and I'll try to get to them!
